How to Choose Width

How feet differ

Feet vary not only in length, but in how they rise, widen and rest.
Some arches lift; others lie close to the floor.
Some forefeet gather neatly; others open into a gentle fan.

Width options

Madame Pivot offers five widths to reflect these differences:

WidthQuiet descriptionSuitable for
FlatA low, level profileLow instep, foot lying close to the ground
NarrowA closer, contained holdSlender forefoot; foot that does not widen much when standing
StandardBalanced and unforcedSuits many; a natural starting point
WideSpace to broaden comfortablyForefoot that opens slightly when weight is placed
Extra WideRoom without pressureBroad forefoot, square or gently spreading toe-line

What width affects

Width does not change the length of the shoe.
It changes the way the shoe embraces the foot across the arch and forefoot.

The right width feels:

  • Close, but not tight

  • Steady, but not managed

  • Present, yet easily forgotten

When the width is right, the shoe does not introduce itself.
It simply lets the body take its place.
